Reference(s) May Abdera#227, CN type#5549
Obverse description Griffin springing to the left in high relief, rendered with characteristic Abderite style: the creature displays a powerfully muscled leonine body with haunches gathered beneath it, prominent folded wings rising above the back with feathers finely detailed, and an avian head with open beak turned to the left. The forepart of the body is raised in a springing posture, with forelegs extended. The type served as the long-standing civic emblem of Abdera, reflecting the city's Ionian cultural heritage. No legend or border ornament appears on the obverse field.
