Rhodes issued posthumous Alexanders under the names of local magistrates — a practice that blended the commercial utility of a universally recognized coin type with civic administration. Teisylos served as the responsible magistrate for this issue, his name appearing as the issuing authority during a decade when Rhodes was navigating the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake in 226 BC that had toppled the Colossus and left the city dependent on gifts from Hellenistic kings, including Philip V and Antiochus III — both of whom would soon become enemies of Rome.
