Probus spent virtually his entire reign on campaign, fighting simultaneously on the Rhine, Danube, and eastern frontiers after inheriting an empire still fractured by the crisis of the third century. The Alexandrian mint tracked his movements through a rapid succession of victory types, each issue tied loosely to specific campaigns — the left-facing Victory on this piece almost certainly references his operations against Germanic incursions in Gaul and the Rhineland during 277-278, though Alexandria's engravers were working from official dispatches, not firsthand accounts.
Milne 4555 is among the more precisely documented of the late Alexandrian tetradrachm series, catalogued from the substantial Egyptian hoards that have given scholars the sequencing framework used today.
