Obverse description Griffin seated left in profile with right forepaw raised, depicted in a bold archaic style. A scarab beetle appears in the left field beside the griffin. The entire design is contained within a beaded border (circle of dots), a characteristic feature of Abderan coinage of this period.

Reverse description Incuse square of quadripartite type with a raised mill-sail or raised quadripartite pattern at center, a hallmark of early Greek coinage technique. The name of the issuing magistrate Phittalos is inscribed in archaic Greek letters arranged around the recessed square, divided across its margins as ΕΠΙΦ ΙΤΤ ΑΛ Ο.
