Philip V struck these tetradrachms at Pella during one of the most consequential stretches of his reign — the years immediately following his treaty with Hannibal and the inconclusive First Macedonian War, as he maneuvered to exploit Roman exhaustion while simultaneously eyeing Ptolemaic possessions in the Aegean. The timing is precise: production ends around 200 BC, the year Rome declared the Second Macedonian War after Philip's aggression in Greece and Asia Minor finally exhausted Roman patience.
The Pella mint attribution is well-established across the major reference corpora, with SNG Alpha Bank and HGC 3.1 in agreement on classification.
