| Beschrijving voorzijde | Diademed and bearded male portrait bust of Pharnaces I in high relief, facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic royal portrait tradition. The royal diadem, tied at the nape of the neck with ends visible behind the head, encircles the king's curly hair, which is rendered in fine, deeply modelled waves characteristic of Pergamene-influenced die engraving. The beard is short and neatly trimmed, framing a strong jawline and aquiline profile. The truncation of the neck is bare, and the portrait field is otherwise unadorned, allowing the effigy to dominate the flan. The style reflects the sophisticated Hellenistic court art of Pontic royal coinage in the early second century BC. |
