| Obverse description | Facing lion scalp displayed en face, the mane rendered in bold, deeply engraved radiating locks spreading across the entire field. The facial features are executed with vigorous high relief, showing wide-set eyes, a broad flat nose, and prominent flanking whiskers. The ears are visible at the upper corners of the splayed mane, which fills the flan to its edges. The design follows the archaic Samian tradition of presenting the lion head as a flattened, heraldic mask viewed directly from above. No legend or border is present; the type serves as the principal civic emblem of the island of Samos. |
