The Agrianes occupied the upper Strymon valley in what is now southwestern Bulgaria, and their name surfaces in ancient sources primarily as allies — most famously, the Agrianians formed the elite javelin corps that served Alexander the Great on his Asian campaigns. This coin type, attributed to the chieftain Patraos, belongs to the generation immediately surrounding that alliance, struck at a moment when Macedonian monetary influence was reshaping Thracian silver production entirely.
The type closely follows Macedonian tetradrachm weight standards, a deliberate adoption rather than coincidence.
