Numerianus ruled for barely a year before being found dead in his litter in 284 AD, his body reportedly carried for days by attendants concealing the death to avoid losing imperial favor. The Alexandria mint continued striking throughout his short co-reign with Carinus, producing a tight sequence of dated issues by regnal year that allows modern scholars to place pieces like this one within a narrow window of perhaps twelve months of actual production.

Milne 4884 falls within theYear 1 Alexandria series. The Dikaiosune/Aequitas type was a standard reversal to justice imagery — pointed, given the circumstances of his death and the subsequent civil war between Carinus and Diocletian at the Margus River in 285.
