Numerian's reign lasted barely two years. He was found dead in his litter in late 284 AD — reportedly having been carried for days before anyone noticed, his generals claiming illness to conceal what most ancient sources treat as murder. This coin's regnal year dating places it squarely in that final, chaotic phase of his rule, struck at Alexandria under an emperor who may already have been a corpse when some of these pieces changed hands.
