He extends his right arm forward to support an eagle with wings closed perched upon his outstretched hand, while his left hand rests upon a long sceptre. Beneath the throne appears a wheat ear symbol, and to the lower left of the throne a monogram is visible in the field. The Greek legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΛEΞANΔPOY is inscribed vertically along the right field, reading downward, identifying this issue as struck in the name of King Alexander. The coin is bordered by a dotted beaded rim. |

Nicocles was the last independent king of Paphos, ruling a city-state with deep ties to Phoenician culture on the southwestern coast of Cyprus. He struck these tetradrachms in Alexander's name following the Macedonian conquest of the island in 333 BC, a political accommodation that kept local dynasts nominally in power while integrating Cyprus into the Macedonian monetary system. The arrangement did not last — Ptolemy I had Nicocles executed around 309 BC after suspecting him of negotiating with Antigonus.
The Tziambazis corpus remains the primary reference for distinguishing Paphian issues within the broader Alexander coinage, largely on the basis of die links and the specific style of the mint's engravers.
