The "Nemet" types from West Noricum take their name from the Nemetes, a Celtic tribe whose territory straddled the upper Rhine — though the precise issuing group within the broader Noric tribal confederation remains debated. These coins circulated through a region that Rome was steadily pressuring but had not yet formally annexed; Noricum was absorbed without military conflict around 15 BC, after which indigenous Celtic silver coinage rapidly disappeared from circulation as Roman provincial money took hold.
