A plain royal diadem encircles the head, with the ends visible behind the neck. Mithridates VI struck this tetradrachm at Pergamon after seizing the city during his sweeping advance through Roman Asia Minor in 88 BC — a campaign that culminated in his order to massacre an estimated 80,000 Roman and Italian civilians across the province in a single coordinated day. Pergamon, formerly the capital of the Roman province of Asia, became one of his primary mints almost immediately upon capture.
The date formula ZΣ IΓ places this piece in regnal year 207 of the Pontic era, confirming production during the height of the First Mithridatic War.
