In the left field, the Pontic royal badge of a star-in-crescent appears prominently. To the right, the regnal year designation ϹΣ (year 206 of the Pontic era, corresponding to 91 BC) is inscribed above a monogram. In the exergue, the letter H denotes the eighth month of the Pontic calendar. The legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ MIΘPAΔATOY EYΠATOPOΣ runs around the reverse field.

附加信息

Mithridates VI struck this issue at Pergamon — a city his forces seized during the First Mithridatic War — using the civic infrastructure of a mint that had, until recently, belonged to Rome's ally Attalus III. The regnal year ϹΣ H (year 206, Pontic era) places production in 91 BC, the eve of his full invasion of Roman Asia, when the king was still consolidating the ideological machinery of his campaign as carefully as its logistics.

De Callataÿ's die studies demonstrate that Mithridates' silver output was extraordinarily prolific relative to other Hellenistic monarchs, making individual die-linkage the only reliable tool for sequencing issues within a given year.
