| Obverse description | Bare-headed, diademed portrait of Mithradates VI Eupator facing right, rendered in the idealized Hellenistic manner with youthful, heroic features strongly reminiscent of Alexander the Great portraiture. The king's abundant, wavy hair flows freely and dramatically back from the temples in thick, deeply modeled locks, filling the field to the left. A plain royal diadem binds the hair above the forehead. The effigy is executed in high relief with bold, assured engraving characteristic of the Pontic royal mint tradition. |
