The attribution of this type has shifted between scholars — Sellwood originally catalogued it under Orodes I, while the Sunrise collection reassigned the issue to Mithridates III, reflecting ongoing uncertainty about the dynastic sequence during a period when Parthian internal succession was violently contested. Mithridates III held Seleucia on the Tigris only briefly, his reign cut short by civil conflict with his brother Gotarzes I.
Seleucia remained the commercial capital of Mesopotamia long after the Seleucids lost it, and its mint output carried weight — literally and politically — across trade routes stretching to India.
