Mithradates V Euergetes is one of the more underappreciated figures in Pontic history — he expanded his kingdom through diplomacy rather than conquest, sending troops to support Rome against Aristonicus in 129 BC and receiving Phrygia as his reward, though Rome later rescinded that grant under pressure from the senate. He was assassinated, almost certainly poisoned, at Sinope around 120 BC, likely by members of his own court. His son, the far more famous Mithradates VI Eupator, would spend the next half-century making Rome regret every political slight visited upon the dynasty.
