Characene, the kingdom centered at Charax Spasinu near the Persian Gulf, occupied a precarious position between Parthian overlordship and the lucrative Indian Ocean trade routes. Meredates — likely a dynast of the mid-second century AD — is among the more obscure rulers of the series, and issues naming a co-ruler or consort alongside him are particularly uncommon. The pairing of two names on a bronze issue of this weight class suggests a deliberate assertion of dynastic legitimacy rather than purely commercial necessity.
