| Reverse description | Deep incuse square containing, at centre, a raised relief head of a helmeted figure facing right, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet with the crest flowing to the rear, rendered with considerable finesse in the classical manner. Surrounding the central raised square, the Greek magistrate's name ΜΕΛΑΝΙΠΠΟΣ is disposed around the four sides of the outer incuse square, with individual letters arranged along each border. The combination of a raised inner square bearing the head set within a recessed outer square is characteristic of the standard Abderitan reverse type of this period. |
