Philip II died in 336 BC, but his coinage continued to be struck for decades after his assassination — first under Alexander III, then under the successors who carved up Macedonia following Alexander's own death in 323 BC. The closing date on this issue places it squarely in the turbulent years of the First and Second Diadochi Wars, when control of Pella itself changed hands and the mint's output served immediate military financing needs rather than any symbolic dynastic program.
Le Rider's landmark 1977 study *Le monnayage d'argent et d'or de Philippe II* remains the definitive die sequence reference for this type. His #531 attribution places this piece within a well-documented late emission group.
