Reverse description Zeus Aëtophoros enthroned left on a low stool-throne, his body draped from the waist, holding an eagle perched on his outstretched right hand and a long sceptre upright in his left. The Greek legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ runs along the right field. In the left field, the monogram ΕΔ is placed above an oenochoe (wine jug) facing right, the latter set beneath a decorative vine tendril, serving as the mint control marks for the Temnos issue.

Additional information

Temnos was a minor Aeolian city on the Hermus River whose mint produced Alexander-type tetradrachms well over a century after the conqueror's death — a practice that had less to do with nostalgia than with commercial necessity. By the second century BC, the posthumous Alexander coinage had become the dominant trade currency across the eastern Aegean, and smaller civic mints issued it simply to participate in regional commerce. Price 1671 is distinguished by its civic magistrate's control marks, which allow attribution to Temnos specifically.
