Struck at Pella roughly four to five decades after Alexander's death, this issue belongs to the long series of posthumous tetradrachms minted by the Antigonid kings who controlled Macedonia after the Wars of the Diadochi. By the 270s BC, Antigonus II Gonatas had consolidated his grip on the kingdom following the catastrophic Gallic invasions of 279–277 BC, and continuing to strike in Alexander's name was a deliberate assertion of dynastic legitimacy — not mere convention. Price 626 is a well-documented variety within the Pella sequence, attributable by monogram and control marks specific to this emission.
