Struck at Pella under Cassander following Alexander's death in 323 BC, this issue belongs to the enormous posthumous series produced by the successor states — each competing to project legitimacy by continuing Alexander's coinage types rather than introducing their own. Cassander's position was particularly fraught: he had the young Alexander IV and his mother Roxane under house arrest in Amphipolis, and would have both murdered by around 310 BC, the very year this series closes.
Price 259 is a well-documented Pella issue. The tight date range assigned to this type reflects the chronological framework established by Martin Price's 1991 corpus, which remains the standard reference for posthumous Alexanders.
