Price 1 is among the most studied posthumous Alexander tetradrachms in the entire series, catalogued by Martin Price in his 1991 corpus as the anchor reference point for the vast output that followed Alexander's death in 323 BC. Macedonian mints continued striking in his name for decades — in some regions, for over a century — partly for commercial convenience in eastern trade networks, and partly because no successor king could yet afford to retire the most trusted silver coinage in the Mediterranean world.
The specific emission behind Price 1 is attributed to a Macedonian mint in the years immediately following the Lamian War.
