Perge was among the Pamphylian cities that continued striking Alexander-type tetradrachms well into the second century BC, long after the Macedonian kingdom itself had fragmented. This issue dates to a narrow window when Rome was consolidating its grip on the eastern Mediterranean following Cynoscephalae, and the old Hellenistic monetary conventions were already becoming anachronistic. Perge's civic mint kept the Alexander types alive partly as a matter of commercial convenience — the coins circulated by weight and recognition, not by political allegiance to any successor.
