Obverse description Youthful head of Heracles facing right, depicted beardless and unidealized in the Hellenistic tradition, enveloped in the scalp of the Nemean lion whose jaws frame the crown of the head and whose paws are knotted at the throat. The deeply modelled facial features display a strong brow, almond-shaped eye, and slightly parted lips. The flowing mane of the lion skin cascades behind the neck in voluminous, naturalistic folds, filling the field to the left. The die work is bold and confident, consistent with the posthumous Alexandrine coinage tradition as struck at Perge in Pamphylia.
