Sinope's adoption of the Alexander-type tetradrachm came well after the Macedonian conquests had made this coinage the dominant commercial currency across the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea region. The city, one of the most prosperous Greek trading ports on the Pontic coast, issued these pieces under its own civic authority while retaining the royal name — a practice common among autonomous cities that recognized the commercial advantage of conforming to a universally accepted monetary standard without formally surrendering independence.
HGC 7, 401 places this type firmly within the posthumous issues, struck decades after Alexander's death in 323 BC. Sinope fell under Pontic influence during this same period, eventually becoming the royal capital of Mithridates I around 280 BC.
