Obverse description Sphinx seated to left in three-quarter profile, depicted in the characteristic Chian style with a human female head, elaborately feathered wings raised above the body, and a serpentine leonine tail curling upward to the right. The creature's foreleg rests upon a small amphora. The flan is irregular and the relief is rendered in confident archaic engraving, with fine detail visible in the wing feathers and facial features. The field is plain and unlettered.

Reverse description Deeply incuse square divided into four compartments by two perpendicular grooves, each quadrant filled with fine parallel striations producing a mill-sail or windmill pattern typical of archaic Chian coinage. The magistrate's name ΗΡΟΣΤΡΑΤΟΣ is inscribed horizontally across the central horizontal bar of the incuse, identifying this issue with the eponymous official Herostratos. The incuse is boldly struck and well-centered within the irregular flan.
