| Obverse description | Sphinx seated left in profile, rendered in fine archaic style with detailed feathering on the folded wings and leonine haunches. To the left of the sphinx, an amphora is depicted in the lower field with a bunch of grapes rising above it, both serving as the characteristic civic symbols of Chios. The composition is contained within a slightly irregular circular flan typical of early Ionian coinage. No legend appears on the obverse, the design relying entirely on the emblematic imagery of the city. |
