Obverse description Bee depicted facing upward in high relief, with outstretched straight wings spread horizontally across the field, segmented abdomen rendered with fine anatomical detail, and prominent rounded thorax and head. The civic abbreviation Ε Φ (for Ephesos) is inscribed in the field to the left and right of the bee respectively, serving as the city ethnic flanking the central device. The flan is broad and irregular, characteristic of fourth-century Ephesian coinage, with the bee occupying virtually the entire die area.
