Abydos, positioned at the narrowest point of the Hellespont, collected tolls on virtually every vessel passing between the Aegean and the Black Sea — the city's coinage reflects that commercial weight rather than military or dynastic ambition. Eukrates is known from a small cluster of civic magistrate issues, his name appearing as the responsible authority rather than a ruler, placing this tetradrachm firmly within the tradition of stephanophoric civic coinage that proliferated across western Asia Minor during the late Hellenistic period as Attic-weight silver remained essential for large transactions.
