| Obverse description | Nike, the goddess of victory, depicted in three-quarter view standing left atop the prow of a galley, rendered in fine Hellenistic style. She holds a stylis (steering oar) in her right hand while raising a long trumpet (salpinx) to her lips with her left hand, as if proclaiming victory at sea. Her drapery flows in the wind, conveying movement and dynamism characteristic of the early Diadoch coinage. The galley prow is shown in profile to the left, its ram and rowing tholes rendered in careful detail, commemorating Demetrius Poliorcetes' celebrated naval victory at the Battle of Salamis (306 BC). |
