| Obverse description | Nike, goddess of victory, stands in three-quarter view to the left atop the prow of a warship (galley), rendered in fine Hellenistic style. She raises a long trumpet (salpinx) to her lips with her right hand while her left hand grasps a stylis, the steering oar of a vessel, serving as a symbol of naval mastery. Her wings are spread prominently behind her, and her drapery billows dynamically in the sea breeze, conveying motion and triumph. The galley prow beneath her feet is depicted in detail, referencing Demetrius Poliorcetes' celebrated naval victories. The field is unlettered on the obverse. |
