Struck at Salamis in Cyprus almost certainly in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Ipsus in 301 BC, where Antigonus — Demetrius's father and co-ruler — was killed and their combined empire effectively shattered. Demetrius retained Cyprus and continued minting in Alexander's name as a legitimizing fiction, projecting continuity with the Argead dynasty despite commanding a kingdom that had just been fatally reduced. Price 3187 places this issue within the final phase of Salaminian production before Demetrius refocused his ambitions on mainland Greece and eventually seized the Macedonian throne itself in 294 BC.
