The reverse legend ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ('of King Demetrius') runs in the upper and lower fields. The composition reflects the mint of Sicyon and the maritime associations of Demetrius's rule. |

Demetrius I earned the epithet "Poliorcetes" — the Besieger — largely through his failed siege of Rhodes from 305 to 304 BC, despite deploying the most sophisticated siege machinery the ancient world had yet seen. Sicyon came under his control in 303 BC when he liberated it from the tyrant Alexion and physically relocated the city to a more defensible hilltop site, renaming it Demetrias. The city's gratitude was, predictably, encouraged rather than spontaneous.
This issue falls within a narrow window before his capture by Seleucus I in 285 BC. Newell 155 is among the better-documented die groupings from the Sicyonian mint's output under his authority.
