Obverse description Diademed head of Demetrius I Poliorcetes facing right, wearing a diadem adorned with bull's horns — an attribute associating him with Poseidon — rendered in the vigorous Hellenistic portrait style characteristic of the late 4th to early 3rd century BC. The hair is rendered in flowing, deeply engraved locks swept back from the forehead and cascading behind the neck, with two prominent curled horns rising above the brow. The portrait is enclosed within a beaded border, the field plain. The effigy conveys idealized heroic youth combined with divine pretension, consistent with Demetrius's practice of presenting himself as a god-king.
