| Reverse description | Poseidon Pelagaios seated left upon a rocky outcrop, his nude muscular figure depicted in a dignified resting pose. In his extended right hand he holds an aphlaston (the curved ornament from a ship's stern), and in his left hand he grasps a long trident, symbol of his dominion over the sea. The Greek legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ runs in two lines in the fields, identifying the issuing king. Monograms appear to the inner left and right of the figure, serving as mint control marks. |
