Chios issued posthumous Alexanders well into the second century BC, long after the practice had become a recognized instrument of commercial credibility across the eastern Mediterranean. This piece falls within the magistracy of Chares, one of several named officials whose tenures help sequence the island's extensive posthumous coinage. The Price corpus places this type among the later Chian issues, by which point the city had refined its production considerably — the weight standard tracks closely to the Attic norm, keeping these coins acceptable in the broader Aegean trade network that Chios depended on for its wine and shipping commerce.
