Carinus ruled as co-emperor under his father Numerian and then briefly as sole emperor before his defeat and death at the Battle of the Margus in 285 AD — the very year this tetradrachm was struck. The Alexandrian mint continued producing its distinctive potin coinage well into the crisis, and issues of Carinus from this final regnal year are notably scarce, as the mint's output was disrupted by the political upheaval surrounding Diocletian's rapid consolidation of power following Numerian's murder.
