Obverse description The obverse depicts the king Azes II on horseback, shown in right-facing profile, seated in a commanding equestrian pose with a spear or sceptre held upright in the right hand. The rider wears military dress with a flowing cloak or drapery behind him, rendered in the bold, somewhat stylised Gandharan tradition typical of Indo-Scythian coinage. The horse is shown in a walking stance with all four legs clearly articulated. A circular Greek legend surrounds the central device, reading BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩN MEΓAΛOY AZOY (King of Kings, Azes the Great), disposed around the full circumference of the coin in the field.
