Audoleon ruled Paeonia during a period of intense pressure from neighboring Macedon — he ultimately aligned himself with Pyrrhus of Epirus and Lysimachus against Demetrius Poliorcetes, a balancing act that kept the kingdom intact through the wars of the Diadochi. The attribution to either Astibos or Damastion as mint site remains unresolved; both were active silver-producing centers in the region, and the SNG ANS variant designation signals this piece departs from the type specimen in at least one die characteristic.
Paeonian tetradrachms of this reign are scarce in any form. Audoleon was the last king to strike with any consistency before Macedonian absorption effectively ended autonomous Paeonian coinage.
