| Obverse description | Prancing horse advancing left in high relief, rendered with naturalistic musculature and raised forelegs, set within a beaded border. The horse's mane is depicted in fine detail, with the tail sweeping downward. The ethnic legend ΜΑΡΩΝΙΤΕΩΝ appears in the right field in archaic Greek characters. The flan is broad and slightly irregular, characteristic of Thracian coinage of the late 5th century BC. |

Maroneia, a Thasian colony on the Thracian coast, owed its prosperity almost entirely to its wine — celebrated in antiquity and traded across the Aegean. The city's coinage of this period reflects that commercial confidence, struck to a weight standard that facilitated exchange with Aegean trading partners during decades when Athenian imperial pressure on regional mints was at its most aggressive.
The Schönert-Geiss corpus remains the definitive reference for Maroneian coinage; her die study identified significant variation within this type, making attributed examples traceable to specific emission sequences.
