This piece belongs to the so-called New Style coinage Athens introduced around 196 BC, replacing the archaic "owl" type after roughly three centuries. The magistrate names on New Style tetradrachms — here Aphrodisi..., Dioge..., and Phainnos — identify the three annual officials responsible for each issue, a bureaucratic mechanism that modern scholars have used to construct a remarkably precise chronology of the series. Thompson's 1961 catalogue remains the definitive reference, cross-referencing die links across hundreds of magistrate combinations.
By 120–119 BC, Athens was minting heavily to service trade across the eastern Mediterranean, where Athenian silver still commanded premium acceptance.
