Antiochus VI was installed as a child king around age three by the general Diodotus Tryphon, who used him as a dynastic prop to seize control of the Seleucid realm from Demetrius II. The boy was almost certainly murdered by Tryphon around 138 BC once he had outlived his political usefulness — ancient sources differ on the method. This issue from Antioch belongs to a reign that existed largely on paper, with real authority concentrated in the hands of a usurper who would eventually claim the throne for himself.
