Athena's left arm rests upon a large round shield set on the ground at her side, and a long spear leans diagonally behind her. In the outer left field, a flower symbol serves as a mint control mark; in the inner left field, the control letters ΕΡ over ΑΡ appear. The royal legend runs in two lines along the right and upper fields, identifying the king by his epithets. |

Antiochos VIII "Grypos" — the Hook-Nose — spent most of his reign fighting his half-brother Antiochos IX for control of a kingdom already fracturing beyond recovery. Seleucia ad Calycadnum, a mint in Rough Cilicia, struck for him during precisely this civil war period, suggesting his authority extended into the southeastern coastal periphery even as Syria itself changed hands repeatedly. The SC 2311 attribution places this issue firmly within that contested later phase of his rule, before his assassination in 96 BC — reportedly arranged by his minister Herakleon.
