Tetradrachm - Antigonus I In the name of Alexander III

Antigonus I Monophthalmos — "the One-Eyed" — began striking coins in Alexander's name not from deference to a dead king but from political calculation. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, controlling the coinage meant projecting legitimacy across a fractured empire, and Antigonus understood that his own face on silver would have invited immediate challenge from rival diadochoi. These issues belong to the prolonged struggle of the Wars of the Successors, during which Antigonus steadily consolidated Asia Minor and Syria before finally claiming the royal title himself in 306 BC.
