Obverse description The civic emblem of Chios depicted as a sphinx seated left in high relief, rendered with fine archaic detail including a scaled wing fanned upward and a carefully articulated lion body with raised forepaw. The sphinx bears a female human head in left profile, with hair elaborately rendered in rows of curls. To the left of the sphinx, an amphora is positioned in the lower field with a grape bunch above it, symbols emblematic of Chios and its celebrated wine trade. The overall composition is characteristic of the refined Ionian engraving style of the early fourth century BC.
