Rhodes maintained its mint output aggressively during the late third century BC, a period when the island republic was navigating the destabilizing aftermath of the 226 BC earthquake — one of antiquity's most catastrophic seismic events, which leveled the Colossus and prompted emergency tribute and gifts from across the Hellenistic world.
