Struck at Paphos on Cyprus in the immediate aftermath of Alexander's death in 323 BC, this issue belongs to the chaotic early Diadochi period when his generals were scrambling to control the eastern mints and their output. Cyprus fell under the authority of Ptolemy by around 321 BC, making the precise political allegiance of this mint during its final Macedonian-style production genuinely ambiguous. Price 3116 is a scarce variety, and Paphos was one of the smaller Cypriot mint operations — output was limited before Ptolemy consolidated the island's coinage under his own name.
