| Obverse description | Head of the youthful Herakles in right-facing profile, wearing the Nemean lion scalp headdress, the skin's gaping jaws framing the hero's brow and cheek, with the paws knotted beneath the chin. The finely modelled facial features display the idealized Lysippan aesthetic characteristic of Alexander's official coinage, with a gently upturned nose, sensitively rendered eye, and softly parted lips. Curling locks of hair emerge from beneath the lion skin at the temple and nape. The field is plain, with no legend, the design filling the flan with confident sculptural authority typical of the finest Macedonian die-cutters. |
